Brand Ethos
Aqua Botanika cultivates seaweed of the highest quality, produced and distributed in safe, efficient, sustainable and regenerative modes. Ocean regeneration will create new, safe, green jobs.
Aqua Botanika
A regenerative aquaculture company that cultivates local seaweeds in natural environments for use as foods and sustainable products.
Why Seaweed?
Intense industrial and agricultural activity and over-use of the sea together with the demise of natural kelp has depleted habitats along the English shoreline, exposing it to extreme weather conditions and increased sea acidity.
Planting kelp ‘forests’ reverses these impacts. Seaweed is widely recognised as a key solution to a host of global problems including climate crisis, food shortages, accretions of plastic waste, collapse of biodiversity and fish populations and increased sea acidity.
“A global network of sea-vegetable farms totaling 180,000 square kilometers—roughly the size of Washington State—could provide enough protein for the entire world population.”
― Bren Smith, Eat Like a Fish: My Adventures Farming the Ocean to Fight Climate Change
Aqua Botanika is committed to regeneration and sustainability in both the ways in which we farm and in the products we make from our crops:
Our Torbay kelp farm uses ARC Marine’s Reefcubes® for anchorage which effectively creates an artificial reef. We are work with partners in food, fertiliser and bio-stimulants, alternative packaging, and cosmetics. We align with other seaweed producers to extend the range of products available today.
Challenges
New technologies and viable solutions that maximize the benefits of seaweed cultivation are constantly evolving. The challenge is to enable the uptake of these technologies and crucially, the uptake of seaweed as a food source across the value chain.
